Roses & Thorns – Day 3

28 Oct

Well, it’s day three of roses, thorns and toot toots – I’m well on my way to making this a habit so that’s good. Today was an excellent day. I love reflecting on excellent days.

Rose: My mom and I went fabric shopping to get all the supplies I need to make a new coat. I’ve never done a sewing project this complicated so it was a huge joy to have her help me get started.

Thorn (with a silver lining): I had a hunger melt down haha. Have you ever had those? Where all of a sudden you’re so hungry that you are absolutely miserable? After fabric shopping I had a couple of errands to run and by the time I got home I was starving. I had a ton of groceries and bags to get in the house and they were all so heavy. And because of my hungry state I let out one of those ridiculously hideous whiny groans as I tried to balance two purses, several fabric loaded bags and a basket of groceries. Not a shining moment. But then I ate half a tub of yoghurt and all was right again in the world. (Side note: If you ever need a pick me up – try Liberte Mediteranee yoghurt – it will change your life.)

Toot Toot: I buckled down and sent out 12 packages to agents! Will one give me a call? Probably not. I still have a lot of real world experience to get. But I put in the effort and got myself out there so that’s what counts!

Twin Escaping Crib Video

28 Oct

I decided to spend a good chunk of my day off today watching daytime television that I haven’t had time to enjoy for a while. It was in watching an excellent episode of Ellen Degeneres that I was presented with this hilarious clip:

The ending is my absolute favorite.

I’m still laughing.

Roses and Thorns – Day 2

28 Oct

In keeping with the goal I made yesterday, it is day 2 of sharing my roses, thorns and toot toots. So here we go!

Rose: That I got to have coffee (and an incredible peanut butter cookie) with a great friend that I don’t get to see nearly enough of outside of work.

Thorn (with a silver lining): It was a quieter night at the restaurant so I didn’t make as much money as would be ideal. But it was only my 5th shift so having less customers was a good learning opportunity.

Toot Toot: I am proud that I am slowly getting the hang of serving and didn’t have to ask for help nearly as much as I have on past shifts.

Day two complete! And roses, thorns or toot toots of your own to share?

58 Days Until Christmas!!

27 Oct

I am a huge fan of variety. Buffets are one of my favorite things because like I say – “why would I go somewhere where I can only try one thing when I can go somewhere where I can try everything“. I have the same mentality when it comes to making Christmas cookies. I honestly can’t wait to get started. Halloween is just around the corner but making orange and black treats just doesn’t tickle my fancy the way ones that sparkle and are shaped like Christmas trees do. My mom picked out the best recipes a long time ago and over the last few years I’ve begun to take over the baking since I love it so much. Last year I made these:

- Gingerbread

- Shortbread

- Shortbread with chocolate chips squares

- lemon squares

- Skor bars

Some are tradition and some were experiments that were so awesome they got added to the permanent list. This year I’m thinking about experimenting with icing on the gingerbread and shortbread which I’ve never done before. But I’m always on the hunt for new possibilities and I’d really like to add a new recipe to the list this Christmas. So if you have any recipes to share – please do!!

Roses and Thorns – Day 1

27 Oct

I don’t know if anyone else out there is familiar with the game of Roses, Thorns and Toot Toots but if the answer is no – then it’s time to hear all about it! I learned this game at camp and I have played it with kids I’ve babysat ever since. The idea is that every night before you go to bed you think of one Rose, one Thorn and one Toot Toot:

- Rose: Something positive about your day. Whatever really stood out and made you happy that day.

- Thorn: Something negative about your day. I like to do “Thorn with a silver lining” wherever possible in order to keep things extra positive. There’s no denying that sometimes your day can be really sucky and you just need to admit how upset you are. But most of the time I like to think about what I’ve learned from my thorn of the day and how it wasn’t the end of the world.

- Toot Toot: Something that happened that day that you’re proud of. Whether it’s finally getting the floors vacuumed or finishing a project you’ve been working on for weeks – if it makes you proud, it’s worthy of a toot toot.

I’m going to aim to share my roses, thorns and toot toots every night if I can. I want to focus on each day’s events and appreciate life even more. I would be absolutely honored if you would share your roses, thorns and toot toots with me as well. I learned this game at camp so I was always sharing my thoughts with a group of cabinmates. It is always more fun to share your thoughts and feelings and hear about how others are doing. So please post your very own roses, thorns and toot toots! Here are mine for tonight:

Rose: That I got to go see a show a bunch of my friends were in. And I went with some great people so I had a very fun evening.

Thorn with a silver lining: That I closed at work last night and opened this morning so I got very little sleep. But I managed to function the whole day without feeling too exhausted so it wasn’t the end of the world.

Toot Toot: That I wrote a poem and brought some candy to the cast of the show I saw. I’ve been trying to give more people gifts “just because” to let them know I care and this was an excellent step forward!

So there are mine – please share yours!

Funny Starbucks People – Part 2

26 Oct

A few weeks ago I made a post about ridiculous coffee shop people and thought that was that. I said to myself, “well done, you’ve gotten that off your chest, you’ve thoroughly laughed it off and all is right again in the world!” Alas, I was sorely mistaken. Because there is no end to the variety of humorous/bizarre requests one must attend to as a coffee shop worker. Here are a few examples of people you should never aim to be:

1. The guy who decides it is reasonable to pay for 1.94$ coffee with a hundred dollar bill – and then throws a hissy fit when told that is not possible.

Alright sir, let’s have an honest discussion about this belief. What did it say on the side of this building? Was it Starbucks COFFEE or Starbucks BANK? I believe it was the former. So what I can promise you is a nice steaming hot beverage served with a smile. But what I cannot promise is that I carry ninety eight dollars and six cents in my till. My bosses value my safety and those of my coworkers so large bills are kept securely in a vault that I do not have access to. If you continue to press me I will happily give you several rolls of quarters, dimes and nickels, along with a couple of fives if you are lucky. If you would prefer to not leave the store with a five pound bag of coin, please quit harumpfing, pull out that fiver you know you have tucked in your back pocket and pay for your beverage like a normal human being.

2. The woman who orders a no-foam latte and refuses to leave the store until every last bubble has been carefully eliminated from the top of her beverage.

Now, I get it, Starbucks prices aren’t cheap. We pay the high prices because we want a good quality drink made just the way we like. I understand. I am a customer too. However, let’s take a second and look at the science of this demand. A latte is known throughout North America as being espresso and steamed milk with a layer of froth on top. So let’s accept the first issue here – you aren’t REALLY ordering a latte – you are ordering espresso and warm milk. Then let’s deal with the fact that it’s steamed milk. Not microwaved milk. Not stove heated milk. It’s steamed milk. Meaning, hot air is being shoved through a jug of milk and as it bubbles and escapes, foamed milk occurs. So please understand it is not the easiest thing in the world to dissect foamed milk. I get it, you want more bang for your buck, and that’s cool. I will make you the most foam-less latte I can possibly manage. But if you insist on hovering over me until the cup is positively brimming with warm milk – I will not wish good things for you. So please, mam, take a step back and ask yourself “is this life or death?”, “is getting a bubble free latte going to save starving kids in Uganda?”, “can I get through my day knowing that I consumed half a millimeter of foam?” Ask yourself these questions and then proceed accordingly. Thank you.

3. The person who always wants something for free.

I must say, Starbucks is an incredibly generous company. They donate coffees and pastries to charities, they welcome people into their cafes and washrooms regardless of whether they are a customer and most wonderful of all, they give their employees license to offer a free coffee or a special treat to loyal customers. They want their customers to be happy so if your coffee comes out wrong you’ll likely get a coupon for a free one the next time you come. Or if you’re having a particularly bad day, a kind barista just might give you a petite cupcake for free. And those are wonderful treats. But let’s keep in mind people – they are treats. They aren’t a right, they’re a privilege. Just because the baristas at your regular Starbucks don’t charge you for soy doesn’t mean you can berate the ones at every other Starbucks when they click that additional 75 cent button. You made the request – so accept the consequences. Coffee can be expensive. If you’re going to drink it every day, you’re going to have to pay for it every day. We like doing nice things for people when we can so let us keep doing that instead of yelling “60 CENTS FOR VANILLA SYRUP!!!???” at the top of your lungs and storming out. Because, trust me, when you sound that ridiculous – no one is on your side.

4. The person who doesn’t know what they’re ordering but is adamant that you somehow make the impossible happen.

Let’s face facts here – we are baristas. We are minimum wage workers – we are not snobs. We do however get a lot of training in our jobs and in the majority of cases – we do know what we’re doing. So things you should avoid requesting are the following:

- A caramel macchiato without the caramel drizzle. My poor naive friend, a caramel macchiato without the drizzle is simply a vanilla latte with the shots poured last. The only caramel in that “caramel” macchiato is the criss crossing drizzle on top. I understand you might want to cut some calories – but that is a very nonsensical way to make it happen.

- A no foam caramel macchiato. Now, this one is just fine so long as you accept what is presented to you. However if you look at it and say, “where is the caramel?” I will be fighting the urge to vomit on your face. Let’s be rational here people, how do you physically expect heavy caramel to magically sit afloat on pure liquid. It isn’t scientifically possible. Accept the foam or accept that the caramel is sitting at the bottom of your cup. There is no middle ground.

- A no foam espresso macchiato. What is an espresso macchiato you ask? It is espresso poured over foam. It is two components: espresso and foam. If what you really want is steamed milk than suck it up and pay for the latte. But do not get mad at the barista for making exactly what was asked of him/her.

- A no foam cappuccino. Now come on people, that is just ludicrous. A cappuccino IS foam. It is precisely espresso and foam. Does that mean it will feel lighter than a latte? Yes. Does the fact it is lighter mean we are ripping you off? No. We are giving you precisely what you asked for. You are welcome.

Now…all that being said…my blog is about happy happenings and despite the ridiculousness of my past few shifts I have many things to be thankful for.

- The lovely mother and daughter team that learned my name the second week I was on the job. They’re full of smiles, wait patiently and are full of thank yous. Makes my morning every time!

- The regular who doesn’t give me a dirty look for forgetting the drink he orders every day, but simply repeats it and smiles warmly.

- The owner of the building who brings us candy every time he comes in.

- And most importantly – the wonderful people I work with that help me laugh off any rough encounter. Cause let’s face it – what can’t you handle when you’re laughing?

Pumpkin Spice Smoothie

23 Oct

After making an incredibly delicious Pumpkin Spice Latte last week, I still had more pumpkin puree to make use of. So I was very grateful to come across this recipe. It is the perfect example of a healthy treat. It literally tastes like a smoothie version of pumpkin pie filling but every single ingredient is good for you. How can you say no to that!?

Pumpkin Spice Smoothie

Makes 1 small dessert sized smoothie (if you want it to be more of a meal I would recommend doubling the ingredients)

Ingredients:

- 2 iced cubes

- half a banana (frozen and cubed)

- 1 tablespoon oats

- 1/4 cup pumpkin puree

- 1/3 cup milk

- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

- 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg

- 1 teaspoon sweetener (I used Splenda)

Directions:

1. Blend iced cubes and frozen banana.

2. Once they are broken down add oats, pumpkin, milk, cinnamon, nutmeg and sweetener.

3. Once thoroughly blended transfer to a small glass and eat up with a spoon.

Tofu Quinoa Veggie Bowl

23 Oct

I was a little hesitant about this dish because I’ve only cooked with quinoa one other time in my life. I was also unsure about the fact the recipe requires so little sauce and I thought that might make it bland. But boy was I ever wrong! This dish has so much flavor and it’s loaded with healthy goodies. My thanks to the blog What’s Cookin’ With Mary for introducing me to something new!

Tofu Quinoa Veggie Bowl

Serves 4

Ingredients:

- 1/2 cup uncooked quinoa

- 3/4 cup water

- 1 teaspoon salt

- 3 tablespoons olive oil

- 1/2 cup cubed firm tofu (more or less depending on how much protein you want)

- 12 brussel sprouts (cut in half)

- 1 cup chopped mushrooms

- 1 cup snow peas (trimmed and cut in half)

- 2 eggs (lightly beaten)

- 2 green onions

- 1.5 teaspoons fish sauce

- 2 teaspoons soya sauce

- 2 teaspoons sesame oil

Directions:

1. Combine quinoa , water and salt in a pot and cook.

2. Coat frying pan in 2 tablespoons olive oil and lay tofu flat. Cook on medium heat.

3. In another frying pan scramble eggs and 1 tablespoon olive oil for 2 minutes. Add in brussel sprouts and snow peas. Let cook for 2-3 minutes. Add mushrooms. Stir fry until vegetables reach desired tenderness.

4. By this time tofu and quinoa should be done cooking. Add tofu, fish sauce, soya sauce and sesame oil to veggies. Gently combine. Add in quinoa and mix well.

5. Remove from heat and serve.

Butternut Squash Soup

20 Oct

This is the perfect light, warm meal for the colder days we’ve been having. I’ve been looking for a way to determine whether I like butternut squash so when I cam across this Wishful Chef recipe it seemed meant to be. It’s a big batch of healthy blended goodness and incredibly inexpensive to make so you simply must try it!

Butternut Squash Soup

Serves 6 (Or 3 if you’re like me and can’t help but inhale it)

Ingredients:

- 2 tablespoons olive oil

- 1 butternut squash (peeled, cubed and seeds removed)

- 3 medium sized carrots (peeled and sliced)

- 1 potato (peeled and cubed)

- 1 onion (diced)

- 2 cloves of garlic (minced)

- 4 cups vegetable stock

- salt and pepper (to taste)

Directions:

1. Place oil, squash, carrots, potato, onion and garlic in a large pot. Cook on medium heat for five minutes.

2. Pour in vegetable stock and raise temperature until mixture boils.

3. Reduce heat and let simmer for 40 minutes.

4. Remove from heat and blend in food processor. Depending on the size of your food processor you may have to do this in separate batches.

5. Return blended mixture to pot and stir in salt and pepper.

Thank goodness everything about this dish is healthy because I guarantee you won’t be able to stop at just one bowl!

The All Time Best Smoothie

20 Oct

After many cases of trial and error through the years I finally discovered the trick to the thickest, creamiest smoothie:

Frozen Fruit!

If you make your smoothies with all frozen fruit they come out with a texture so thick they practically have to be consumed with a spoon! Using a frozen banana also helps to create the thickness and a little bit of Splenda goes a long way in terms of frothiness.

The following is just one example of the fruits you can use but feel free to play around with whatever you have on hand. As long as there is frozen fruit, banana, yoghurt and milk – you can’t go wrong!

Amazing Smoothie

Serves 1 as a meal or two as a snack or beverage

Ingredients:

- Half a banana (sliced and frozen)

- 4 strawberries (cut in half and frozen)

- half a peach (cubed and frozen)

- quarter of an avocado (cubed and frozen)

- 1/4 cup yoghurt

- 1/2 cup milk

- 1 tablespoon Splenda

Directions:

1. Begin by blending frozen fruits in a food processor.

2. When they have broken down add milk, yoghurt and Splenda. Continue to blend.

3. Transfer to a glass and drink up!
